Miniatures Monday - The Slave Ogre

He's big, he's bad, he's a bruiser. Although he's called a slave ogre, presumably because of the chains around his ankles (not sure if you can call them manacles if they're not on the hands), he'd make an excellent villain for a low level dungeon.

His armour really has the look of metal (yes, I know that it IS actually metal but you know what I mean) and there is the neat use of slight shading around the arm straps to give the look of stonewashed denim to his sleeve.

Again, Andy's gone for the stone floor effect on the base, and for added exotic flavour, he's made the ogre an albino (note the red eyes balefully staring). IMHO, it gives the figure even more of an air of menace.

Ogres generally don't tend to wear armour. They're regarded as a bit too dim. But if they did, I'd like to think they'd look like this.

  1. Looks nice. I think they are shackles when they're around the ankles.

  2. That's fantastic! I wish I had the talent for doing up minis. And the money to afford them.

For those of us (me) new to this blog, can you explain who makes these and bit about how? Or direct me to a previous post where you do so, so I don't have to sift?

  3. Hi eabod. Thanks for the kind words; I'll pass them on to Andy, my brother who did the painting many years ago.

What you're seeing at these posts (and for more, follow the minis label) or follow this link for the first post in the series

are old Citadel Miniatures figures from the eighties. Back then (and - I've come to learn - somewhat atypically) my group used figures for D&D all the time. Andy was (and I assume still is) a great figure painter and he did nigh on fifty or so figures, a lot of which were variations on a theme (watch out for the Drow coming soon) but when we went dormant as a group, they stayed in their boxes for twenty years or more. Then, when I restarted my gaming with Junior Grognard, Andy bequeathed the figures to him and we're holding them in protective custody.

This link should take you to a site where the old Citadel miniatures are displayed in all their glory.

I've just taken a quick look at your blog and note that you, like many other DMs are having the old 'railroad v free-form adventure' conundrum. There's a wide variety of friendly input on this issue on the blogroll to your right.

In conclusion, thanks for popping in - hope that I've answered your questions and feel free to pose more if you want.

  4. Thank you, Daddy Grognard! You have given me more assistance than I could have asked for. And these minis posts are great.

I'd love to be able to paint my own as skillfully as does Andy. I tired a bit when I was younger, but I'm afraid my hands shake, so they came out a bit sloppy. Alas, I'll just have to be a patron of this particular art. :)
